Let’s be honest — in the Philippines, music is that thing we’re all supposed to love, but never really pursue. You’re encouraged to sing your heart out at karaoke, but the second you say, “Hey, I want to make music my career,” you’re met with an awkward silence and maybe a polite, “But what’s your backup plan?”
For something that brings so many of us joy, comfort, even identity — music gets shockingly little love in our education system. It’s usually shoved into a class called MaPeH (you know, that strange combo of Music, Arts, PE, and Health — because apparently those four are the same thing?) and treated like a side salad nobody ordered.
Only recently did the government decide that maybe — just maybe — the arts deserve more than a shrug. In 2022, they passed the Creative Industries Development Act, a law meant to recognize creativity (yes, including music) as a legitimate economic force. It promised things like funding, support systems, investment incentives, and a grand plan to help artists and creatives thrive. Progress? Sure. But let’s be real — it still feels like music is treated as optional. Like extra rice. Nice to have, but not exactly the main course.
Worse, there’s still this ridiculous stereotype that people in the arts are less smart or less capable. (Let’s just ignore the mountains of research linking music training to cognitive development, because… feelings?) 🙄

So what happens? People who once dreamed of becoming musicians end up shelving their aspirations, stuck in jobs that might pay the bills but don’t light their soul on fire. And then one day, usually in their 30s or 40s (or 60s!), they wonder, “What if I had just… tried?”
And here’s the thing: you don’t have to choose. You can have your day job and still live a life with music. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You don’t need to abandon your creative nature to be “practical.” You just need the right space to keep it alive.
That’s where we come in.
